Nanorheology and Microscopic Friction

ABSTRACT


    Shear rheology of simple fluids confined between atomically smooth surfaces down to film thicknesses of few nanometers is not only important in understanding the viscoelastic properties of fluid films but also provide information on microscopic friction of lubricated surfaces. This talk will concentrate on oscillatory shear experiments of molecularly thin simple fluids between mica surfaces by surface forces apparatus. The effect of film thickness on viscoelastic properties of fluid films, the origin of stick-slip motion in friction of lubricated surfaces and the coupling of friction (lateral forces) and dilation (normal forces) will be discussed.
